Independence and Self-determination of East Timor through the information contained in the Barbedo de Magalhães Information System

O “Sistema de Informação Barbedo de Magalhães” (SIBM) é um repositório de informação que resultou de um percurso de vida do Professor Barbedo de Magalhães, o qual teve um papel preponderante no processo de apoio ao reconhecimento do direito de independência e autodeterminação de Timor-Leste.
Constituído por 1636 documentos compostos, este Sistema de Informação (SI) está acondicionado nas instalações do Arquivo da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto e foi fruto do seu trabalho de recolha e guarda de anos de ação pela causa Timorense.
Encarando como fio condutor as etapas da solidariedade liderada por Barbedo de Magalhães, a estrutura atual tem um caráter temático-funcional, constituída por dezassete secções, correspondendo cada etapa a uma fase na luta pela autodeterminação e independência de Timor-Leste.
O que se procura nesta comunicação é dar a conhecer, ainda que sumariamente, o seu conteúdo e a oportunidade para identificar atores, redes, instituições e estratégias, de diplomacia informal/formal, intervenientes no processo de Independência.
É, pois, nosso objetivo, que a memória escrita seja suporte para a reconstituição dos passos seguidos no processo de solidariedade, apontando vertentes estruturais na reconstituição de todo o processo, como o papel do Governo Português, as relações e pressões internacionais, o papel da ONU, desde a questão da ocupação de Timor-Leste ao direito à sua autodeterminação.

The “Barbedo de Magalhães Information System” (SIBM) is an information repository that belongs to Professor Barbedo de Magalhães, who played a leading role in the process of supporting the recognition of East Timor’s right to independence and self-determination. Including 1636 composed documents, this Information System (IS) is currently allocated in the FEUP’s Archive, and it was the result of his work of collecting and storing years of action for the Timorese cause.
Facing the stages of solidarity lead by Barbedo de Magalhães as the guiding principle, the current structure has a thematic-functional character, consisting of seventeen sections, each stage corresponding to a phase in the struggle for self-determination and independence of East Timor.
With this communication we intend to make known, even briefly, this content and the opportunity to identify actors, networks, institutions and strategies, of informal / formal diplomacy, intervening in the Independence process.
It is, therefore, our intention, that written memory became a support for the reconstruction of the stages followed in the solidarity process, making point structural aspects in the reconstruction of the entire process, such as the role played by the Portuguese Government, international relations, and pressures, the role played by the United Nations, since the point of the East Timor occupation, to its right to self-determination.
