Between September 7th and 11th the Timor-Leste Studies Association - Portugal organizes The International Conference TLSAPT2020 Timor-Leste: The Island and the World, with the support of the Centro de Estudos Sociais (Universidade de Coimbra), Associação Ibero-Americana de Estudos do Sudeste Asiático, Universidade Aberta and partner institutions in Timor-Leste.
This is an online conference, that takes place in Universidade Aberta’s moodle platform, with participants from all continents. In Timor-Leste, online sessions will be broadcasted live in Dili, in audiovisual rooms opened to the public by the partner institutions — Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e, Centro Cultural Português, Centro Nacional Chega!, Human Rights Centre (UNTL), Fundação Oriente —, where some speakers will also perform their presentations in person.
The main speakers of the plenary sessions are the former President of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize winner José Ramos-Horta (opening session); the writer Joana Ruas (closing session); Timorese writer Luís Cardoso and Professor Teresa Sousa de Almeida (closing session).
This Conference opens doors for those dedicated, in the most diverse areas, to research and study the recent developments in the knowledge production process from Timor-Leste and its relations with other cultures and societies.
From Australia, Brazil, Canada, USA, France, Netherlands, Indonesia, Japan, Portugal, United Kingdom and Timor-Leste, around 120 researchers present papers — in Portuguese, English and Tetum, grouped into 16 panels that address different topics related to Timor-Leste: Education, Language, Literature, Economics, Territory, Environment, History, Sociology, Culture, Anthropology, Politics (https://2020.tlsa.pt/en/paineis/).
In addition to the panel presentations, book launches and two exhibitions are held: Art Exhibition by the awarded visual artist Maria Madeira; Collective Photo Exhibition by conference participants.
